History of Donovaly Ski Resort

A Mountain Landscape Shaped by Ice and Water

Donovaly’s setting reflects the meeting of two Slovak mountain systems: the Low Tatras to the east and the Great Fatra to the west. The pass, surrounding valleys and rounded uplands were formed through long geological processes and later modified by erosion, woodland growth and human land use. Today’s open meadows around the settlement are not simply untouched mountain scenery; they also reflect centuries of grazing, haymaking and forestry in a highland environment where communities used the land seasonally.

Mining Origins in the Staré Hory Mountains

The history of Donovaly is closely connected with the mining zone around Staré Hory and the surrounding hills. Copper mining and related activity helped shape settlement and transport patterns in central Slovakia from the medieval and early modern periods, although the most important workings were distributed across the wider region rather than concentrated solely in the present ski resort.
