Getting There

  • Car Rental

Begin your journey in Auki, the capital of Malaita. Rent a car from one of the local rental agencies. Once you have your vehicle, head southwest on the main road (the Auki-Malaita Highway). Continue on this road for approximately 40 kilometers. Look for signs pointing towards Mount Latinarau, as you near the village of Fiu. The last stretch to the mountain may require a 4WD vehicle due to rough terrain. It is advisable to check the local weather conditions before your trip, as roads may be impassable during heavy rain.

  • Public Transportation (Bus)

From Auki, you can take a local bus heading toward Fiu. Buses leave frequently from the Auki bus terminal. Inform the driver that you are heading to Mount Latinarau, and they will drop you off at the nearest point accessible by road. This bus ride will cost around SBD 30 (Solomon Islands Dollars). Once you get off, you may need to hike the remaining distance to the mountain, which could take about 1-2 hours depending on your fitness level. Ensure you have good walking shoes and plenty of water.

  • Hiking

After arriving at the drop-off point near Fiu, prepare for a hike towards Mount Latinarau. The trail begins at the village of Fiu, where local guides can be hired for a small fee (around SBD 100) to assist you on the hike. Follow the trail markers and take in the stunning scenery along the way. The hike itself is moderately challenging and should take approximately 2-3 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry essentials such as water and snacks.
