Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, first head to the town of Underberg, which is a common starting point for visitors to the Drakensberg Mountains. From Underberg, take the R617 towards Himeville. Once you reach Himeville, continue on the R617 until you see signs for the Drakensberg Gardens Road. Follow this road, which will lead you into the mountains. Keep an eye out for the signs that indicate the direction to Cathkin Peak. The last stretch involves turning onto a dirt road that leads to the parking area near the base of the mountain. Make sure your vehicle can handle rough terrain, as some parts of the road may be uneven.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, start by taking a bus or shuttle from Durban to Underberg. Buses like Greyhound or Intercape offer services to Underberg, which is the closest town. Once in Underberg, you can either hire a local taxi service or arrange for a transfer to the Drakensberg Gardens area. Make sure to confirm the cost of the taxi or transfer beforehand, as prices can vary. Once you arrive at the Drakensberg Gardens, you will need to walk or take a local shuttle to the base of Cathkin Peak. Be prepared for a bit of hiking to reach the peak.

• Hiking

  Once you reach the parking area, you will need to hike to Cathkin Peak. There are marked trails that lead to the summit, but it's recommended to have a map or GPS, as some paths may not be well-defined. The hike to the peak can take approximately 3-4 hours, depending on your fitness level. Be sure to pack water, snacks, and a first-aid kit. Wear appropriate hiking gear and be mindful of the weather conditions, as they can change rapidly in the mountains.
