Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, head towards the Royal Natal National Park. From the main city areas such as Durban, take the N3 highway towards the Drakensberg region. After approximately 200 kilometers, take the exit towards R616/Phuthaditjhaba, and follow the R616 until you reach the entrance of the Royal Natal National Park. Note that there is an entrance fee of around R50 per person for the park. Once inside the park, follow the signs towards the Tugela Falls trailhead. The road is well-maintained, but be cautious of mountain conditions.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transport, you can take a bus from Durban to the town of Bergville. From Bergville, you will need to arrange for a taxi or shuttle service to the Royal Natal National Park. It’s advisable to book your transportation in advance, as services may not be frequent. Upon arrival at the park, pay the entrance fee of approximately R50 per person. After entering the park, you can either hike to Tugela Falls or hire a local guide for a more informative experience.

• Hiking

  For those who love adventure, you can hike to Tugela Falls from the trailhead located inside the Royal Natal National Park. The hike is approximately 6 km one way and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Ensure you have appropriate hiking gear, enough water, and snacks for the journey. The hike can take around 2-4 hours depending on your fitness level. It’s recommended to start early in the morning to avoid afternoon thunderstorms.
