Car

From Sani Pass, head south on the Sani Pass road (R617) towards Underberg. The drive will take approximately 30-40 minutes. The road can be steep and winding, so drive cautiously. As you approach Underberg, look for signs directing you to Hippo Pools. Turn onto the gravel road leading to the Hippo Pools nature preserve, which is approximately 5 km from the main road. Parking is available at the preserve.

Public Transportation

If you are using public transportation, you will need to take a local taxi or shuttle service from Sani Pass to Underberg. These services can be found near lodges and guesthouses in Sani Pass. Once in Underberg, you can either take another taxi to Hippo Pools or walk if you're feeling adventurous and the weather permits. The distance from Underberg to Hippo Pools is about 5 km, and walking will take approximately 1 hour.

Hiking

For the more adventurous, you can hike to Hippo Pools from Underberg. Start from the center of Underberg and follow the path leading into the nature preserve. This hike is approximately 5 km and will take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your pace. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry plenty of water.
