Maclear's Beacon: A Pinnacle of Natural Beauty

Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving, begin your journey by entering Table Mountain National Park through the main entrance at Hout Bay or the Cableway entrance. Follow the signs towards the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Park your car in the designated parking area near the cableway station. Note that there is a parking fee of approximately R10 per hour. Once parked, purchase a ticket for the cable car which costs around R360 for a return trip. The cable car will take you up to the summit of Table Mountain.

• Cable Car

  After arriving at the upper cable station, you will find various trails leading to different points on the mountain. To reach Maclear's Beacon, head towards the signposted route that directs you to the 'Maclear's Beacon'. The walk to Maclear's Beacon is approximately 30 minutes from the cable car station. The path is well-marked and offers stunning views along the way. Ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water.

• Public Transportation

  If you prefer public transport, take the MyCiTi bus service to the 'Table Mountain Aerial Cableway' stop. The bus fare is around R20-R30, depending on your starting point. Once you arrive, proceed to the cableway station as described above. Remember to check the bus schedules for return trips, especially if you're visiting during off-peak hours.

• Hiking

  For the more adventurous, you can also hike to Maclear's Beacon. Popular starting points include the Platteklip Gorge trail or the India Venster trail. Both trails lead to the summit, but they require a good level of fitness. The hike can take 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on your pace. Be sure to start early, as the trails can become crowded, and always check the weather conditions before heading out.
