Travel Guide to Rust-en-Vrede Waterfall

Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving from Cape Town, take the N1 highway towards Worcester. After about 90 kilometers, take the exit towards the N1/N7 for a brief stretch before merging onto the N2 highway towards George. Continue on the N2 for approximately 300 kilometers. Take the exit for R62 towards Oudtshoorn. Follow the R62 for about 30 kilometers, then turn onto the R328 towards the Swartberg Mountains. Continue on this road for about 18 kilometers until you reach the Rust-en-Vrede Waterfall. There is a small parking area near the waterfall.

• Public Transportation

  From Cape Town, take a Greyhound or Intercape bus to Oudtshoorn. The journey takes about 5-6 hours. Upon arrival in Oudtshoorn, you can hire a taxi or use a local shuttle service to reach Rust-en-Vrede Waterfall, which is approximately 30 kilometers away. Confirm the fare with the driver beforehand—expect to pay around R300-400 for the taxi ride. It is advisable to arrange the return trip with the taxi driver to ensure you have a way back.

• Hiking

  For the adventurous, you can hike to the Rust-en-Vrede Waterfall from the nearest town, Oudtshoorn. Start your hike from the town center, following the R328 towards the Swartberg Mountains. The trail is approximately 12 kilometers and can take around 3-4 hours to reach the waterfall. Ensure you bring sufficient water, snacks, and a map or GPS device, as the trail can be challenging in parts. Always check the weather conditions before setting off.
