Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car, head towards the small town of Port St. Johns, which is a central point in the Wild Coast region. From Port St. Johns, take the R61 road in the direction of Mthatha. After approximately 25 kilometers, look for the signs directing you towards the Waterfall Bluff hiking trail. There is a parking area where you can leave your vehicle, but be cautious as the roads can be rough and may require a 4x4 vehicle.
Public Transport
For those using public transport, catch a minibus taxi from Mthatha to Port St. Johns. The taxis are frequent and relatively inexpensive (around R50 per person). Once in Port St. Johns, you will need to hire a local taxi or arrange for a guided tour that can take you to the start of the Waterfall Bluff hiking trail. Expect to pay about R150 to R200 for a short transfer.
Hiking
After reaching the parking area or drop-off point, prepare for a hike to Waterfall Bluff. The hike is approximately 3 kilometers and can take 1 to 2 hours depending on your fitness level. The trail is well-marked, but be prepared for some steep sections and uneven terrain. Bring water, snacks, and a camera to capture the stunning views along the way. Ensure you wear appropriate hiking shoes.
Use Waterfall Bluff as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
