If you're traveling by car within Black Hills National Forest, the Black Hills Petrified Forest is located at 8220 Elk Creek Rd, Piedmont, SD 57769. From major locations like Rapid City, take SD-44 E. In approximately 10 miles, turn right onto Elk Creek Rd, where you'll see signs directing you to the Petrified Forest. Continue on Elk Creek Rd for about 2 miles; the entrance to the forest will be on your left. Parking is available on-site, and there is no cost for parking.

Public transportation options are limited in the Black Hills area. However, you can take a bus from Rapid City to Piedmont. Check local transit schedules for routes that connect these locations. Once in Piedmont, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to reach the Black Hills Petrified Forest, as it is about 5 miles from the bus stop. Expect to pay for the taxi or rideshare, which may range between $10-$20 depending on the service.

For the adventurous, biking can be a great way to reach the Black Hills Petrified Forest. If you're starting from Rapid City, you can take the bike paths leading towards Elk Creek Rd. Follow SD-44 E for a safe route, and then turn onto Elk Creek Rd. The total distance from Rapid City is about 15 miles, so ensure you have the proper gear and supplies for the ride. Keep in mind that the terrain can be hilly.

Walking to the Black Hills Petrified Forest is not recommended due to the distance and lack of pedestrian-friendly paths from major locations. However, if you are staying nearby in Piedmont, you can walk to the forest. From the center of Piedmont, head east on SD-44 for about 1.5 miles, then turn onto Elk Creek Rd and walk for another mile until you reach the entrance. Make sure to dress appropriately and carry water.
