Breezy Point Picnic Area: Nature's Oasis in Keystone, South Dakota

Getting There

• Walking

  From the center of Custer, head west on Mount Rushmore Road (US-16) for about 1 mile until you reach the junction with SD-36. Turn left onto SD-36 and continue south for approximately 6 miles. You will then reach the entrance to Custer State Park. Enter the park, and follow the signs towards the Breezy Point Picnic Area. The picnic area is located along the shore of Stockade Lake, a short distance from the main road. The total distance is about 7 miles, so be prepared for a pleasant walk through the scenic landscapes.

• Biking

  Start at the Custer County Courthouse in the center of Custer. Ride west on Mount Rushmore Road (US-16) for about 1 mile, then take a left onto SD-36. Continue biking on SD-36 for about 6 miles until you reach the entrance to Custer State Park. Once inside the park, follow the signs to Breezy Point Picnic Area. The ride offers beautiful views, and the total distance is approximately 7 miles. Make sure to wear a helmet and stay hydrated!

  For an adventurous hike to Breezy Point Picnic Area, start from Custer and follow the trails in Custer State Park. From the center of Custer, navigate to the nearest trailhead that leads towards the park. You can take the Wild Idea Trail or the Bluebird Trail, which will eventually connect with the routes leading to Breezy Point. The total hiking distance can vary, but expect to cover approximately 8-10 miles depending on the route you choose. Bring plenty of water and snacks for your hike!
