Walking
From downtown Custer, head southeast on Mount Rushmore Road (SD-16A) for about 0.5 miles until you reach the intersection with SD-87. Turn left onto SD-87 and continue walking for approximately 3 miles. You will pass several scenic views along the way. Keep an eye out for signs indicating the Needles Eye Tunnel. As you approach MP 31, look for the entrance to the tunnel on your right. The tunnel is located just off the road, and you can easily walk to it.
Bicycle
Rent a bicycle from one of the local shops in Custer. Start your journey by heading southeast on Mount Rushmore Road (SD-16A) for about 0.5 miles. At the intersection with SD-87, turn left and continue cycling for approximately 3 miles. This route offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. As you near MP 31, watch for the Needles Eye Tunnel entrance on your right. There is a small area to park your bike safely while you explore the tunnel.
Public Transportation
Although Custer doesn't have extensive public transportation, you can check if local tour services offer rides to the Needles Eye Tunnel. Start at the Custer Visitor Center and ask about any available shuttle services or guided tours that include the tunnel. If available, you can board the shuttle, which will take you directly to MP 31 on SD-87, where the Needles Eye Tunnel is located.
