The land around present-day El Palmeral belonged historically to the agricultural fringe south of Alicante, where irrigated plots and palms formed part of the wider landscape between the city and the coast. Its development was shaped less by a medieval urban core than by its position beside the southern road towards Elche and the port approaches. Over time, fields and dispersed rural properties gave way to roads, utilities and residential construction, creating the modern neighbourhood. The name reflects the area's palm-rich visual character, although it should not be confused with the historically significant Palmeral of Elche.

The strengthening of road links along Alicante's southern waterfront encouraged El Palmeral's transformation into a modern residential and service area. Avenida de Elche became the neighbourhood's principal landward corridor, connecting the city with industrial, port-related and airport-bound routes farther south. This infrastructure brought apartment development and everyday urban services, while also separating some residential areas from the shoreline. Unlike central Alicante, El Palmeral did not evolve around a traditional square, church or dense commercial street; its character developed through planned buildings, open land and transport connections.

The establishment of Parque El Palmeral gave the expanding district a substantial public green space and formalised its association with palms and water. Designed as a landscaped park with ponds, cascades, paths and recreation areas, it preserved a sense of the area's earlier relationship with cultivated vegetation while adapting it to contemporary urban life. The park remains the neighbourhood's clearest civic focus, providing a setting for walking, play and informal local recreation. Its presence distinguishes El Palmeral from the more heavily built-up stretches of Alicante's southern approach.

In recent decades El Palmeral has remained part of Alicante's southern urban corridor, influenced by the port, coastal roads, airport access and continuing residential growth elsewhere in the city. Its identity is therefore practical and landscape-based rather than centred on a large collection of historic monuments. The park, nearby coastal spaces and broad transport routes show how former peripheral land has been incorporated into the metropolitan city. Visitors encounter a neighbourhood whose significance lies in its green infrastructure and position between Alicante's urban core and the open southern coast.
