Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Kandy, the capital of Central Province. Take the A1 highway towards Kurunegala. The drive will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Once you reach Kurunegala, look for the signs directing you to Athugala Rock. The rock is located just outside the city center. You can park your vehicle at the base of the rock and begin your hike to the summit.
Public Transportation
To reach Athugala Rock by public transportation, take a bus from Kandy to Kurunegala. Buses leave frequently from the Kandy bus station and the journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive at the Kurunegala bus station, you can take a tuk-tuk to Athugala Rock. The tuk-tuk ride will cost around 300-500 LKR and will take about 15 minutes. Ask the driver to take you to the base of the rock where you can start your hike.
Trekking
Once you arrive at the base of Athugala Rock, prepare for a trek to the summit. The hike is not very strenuous, but it does involve some steep sections. Ensure you have proper footwear and carry enough water. The trek can take approximately 30-45 minutes depending on your fitness level. Enjoy the scenic views as you ascend, and once at the top, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Kurunegala and the surrounding landscape.
