Car
If you're driving from Kandy, start on the A1 road heading south towards Colombo. After approximately 20 km, take the exit onto the A26 road towards Nuwara Eliya. Continue on A26 for about 35 km, passing through beautiful tea plantations. As you approach the town of Nuwara Eliya, look for signs to the A5 road. Turn onto A5 and continue for about 15 km until you reach the entrance to Hawagala. The last few kilometers will involve winding roads, so drive carefully.
Public Transport
From Kandy, take a bus to Nuwara Eliya. Buses run frequently, and the fare is around 150 LKR. The journey takes roughly 2-3 hours depending on traffic. Once in Nuwara Eliya, you can hire a tuk-tuk or a taxi to take you to Hawagala. This ride will cost between 500-1000 LKR and takes about 30 minutes. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand.
Combine Car and Hiking
If you're looking for a more adventurous route, drive to the nearest point to Hawagala where vehicles can go, which is the base of the mountain. You can park your car and then hike up to the peak. The hiking trail is well-marked, and it takes about 1-2 hours to reach the summit. Ensure you wear proper hiking shoes and carry water. The trail is steep but offers stunning views of the surrounding area.
Use Hawagala as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
