Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car from the town of Paramaribo, head south on the A1 highway towards the Sipaliwini District. The journey will take approximately 4-5 hours depending on road conditions. Once you reach the Sipaliwini District, continue driving towards the village of Kwamalasamutu. From Kwamalasamutu, you will need to take a local road that leads toward the Tafelberg area. Keep an eye out for road signs, as this is a less traveled path and may not be well marked. The last stretch may require a 4x4 vehicle due to uneven terrain. Make sure to have a reliable map or GPS, as mobile signal may be limited.
Public Transportation
To reach Tafelberg via public transportation, start from Paramaribo and take a bus to the town of Albina. From Albina, you can find a bus or taxi that goes to Kwamalasamutu. The bus ride from Paramaribo to Albina costs around 30 SRD, and the trip may take about 3 hours. Once in Kwamalasamutu, you will need to hire a local guide or a 4x4 taxi to take you to Tafelberg. This part of the journey may cost between 100-200 SRD depending on the negotiation with the driver. It is advisable to arrange this in advance if possible.
Hiking
If you are an adventurous traveler and prefer to hike, you can start your journey from Kwamalasamutu. Make sure to have a local guide with you, as the paths can be challenging to navigate. The hike to Tafelberg may take several hours and will require proper hiking gear and supplies. Always inform someone about your plans and expected return time. It's also recommended to bring water and snacks as there are no facilities along the way.
