A living ravine: landscape and scale

Älvravinerna stretches for several hundred metres along the river between Bullerforsen and Domnarvsbron and covers roughly 37 hectares, a compact but varied green lung tucked into Borlänge’s urban edge. The reserve’s core is a steep-sided ravine carved by the river; its small size concentrates a variety of microhabitats — damp riverbanks, sheltered slopes and drier ridge tops — so that trees, shrubs and ground plants change visibly as you move from one pocket to another.

Trees, flowers and rare understorey

The area is dominated by deciduous species: birch, aspen, grey alder, goat willow and rowan are common, with occasional lime, elm and bird cherry in damper hollows. Because light reaches the forest floor early in spring, the ravine is notable for spring ephemerals such as wood anemone and lily-of-the-valley; ferns, marsh-loving species and nutrient-demanding plants also appear where soils are richer and more humid. One small ravine hosts denser grass growth and distinctive fern stands that mark subtle soil and moisture changes.

Human history woven into nature

The ravine woodland is young in ecological terms: until the late 19th century parts of the valley were used for haymaking and grazing, and traces of that pastoral past survive in pockets of more open, grazed-style land close to the old homestead. The reserve’s management has in places deliberately recreated that meadow-like character to support species that thrive in semi-open habitats, so you encounter both dense, lichen-flecked trunks and lower, park-like glades during a single walk.

Recreation, quiet and fishing

Despite its central location, the reserve feels calm; well-used footpaths follow the ravine edge and provide attractive, shady strolls for local residents, school groups and families. The river supports active sport fishing under local stewardship, so anglers are a familiar sight in season. Benches and occasional clearings invite pauses to listen to running water, birdsong and the rustle of leaves rather than to large-group activity.

Sensory character and seasonal shifts

Spring is when the reserve announces itself: pale carpets of early flowers and fresh green leaves return warmth and light to the slopes. Summer deepens the canopy and cools the ravine; autumn brings a compact, golden show as birch and rowan change colour. Winter offers a stripped-back sculptural landscape where rock, river and bare branches define the ravine’s form. Throughout the year the sound of moving water is a constant, underpinning the reserve’s restorative atmosphere.

Conservation and local stewardship

Declared a municipal nature reserve in 1999, Älvravinerna is administered by the local authority with a management plan that balances natural dynamics with recreational use. Paths are maintained but the reserve is intentionally allowed to develop natural structure in many places, encouraging diverse plant communities and providing habitat continuity along the river corridor that connects to other green areas in and around Borlänge.
