A carved micro-landscape of ravines and streams

Eländesgraven is defined by a primary stream valley that carves through arkosic sandstone and forms a main ravine with one or more side ravines, producing a varied topography in a relatively small footprint. The channel terraces, block-strewn slopes and occasional exposed rock faces create a patchwork of moist north-facing gorges and drier, heather-dotted ridges. This diversity of ground types is what gives the reserve its layered, intimate character.

Old forest, fire history and living continuity

The woodland here preserves stands of long-lived pines and pockets of tall spruce; many trees show evidence of past fires and natural disturbance regimes that shaped the present forest structure. In places you’ll find very old pines, decaying snags and fallen trunks that support a rich assemblage of wood‑living mosses and lichens. The pattern of burnt-open patches and regenerating forest gives the area a sense of both antiquity and ongoing ecological process.

Specialised lichens and a cryptogamic tapestry

Eländesgraven has drawn attention from botanists because the shady cliff faces and humid ravines support a number of oceanic and boreal lichens and other cryptogams that require stable, sheltered microclimates. The combination of fractured sandstone, persistent humidity and old trees creates substrates for species that are scarce in the wider landscape, making the reserve an important refuge for these small, easily overlooked organisms.

Seasonal scenes and sensory details

In spring the valley’s lower reaches reveal a green carpet of mosses and early herbaceous plants; summer brings deep forest shade and a chorus of birds from the ravine sides. In autumn the dry ridges and lichened trunks glow low and warm as light slants across the terrain. The soundscape is mostly the hush of running water and wind through conifers, punctuated by the dry rattle of needles and the occasional bird call — an understated but complex sensory experience.

Conservation, scale and landscape context

Created as a protected area in recent years, the reserve measures about 100 hectares and forms part of a wider mosaic of high-value forest and mountain-forest habitats in northern Dalarna. Its protection aims to maintain the continuity of old forest structures, the microclimates of ravines and the specialised cryptogam communities. Management emphasises low-impact measures and preserving natural disturbance patterns rather than intensive intervention.

Walking through Eländesgraven, look for contrasts: the damp, lichen-rich north-facing rock walls versus the sun-exposed, heather-covered ridges; tall, weathered pines beside young regeneration; and the delicate, crustose lichens clinging to shaded stone. Though compact, the reserve rewards slow observation: small features — a patch of hanging lichen, an old charred stump, a trickle of seep water over stone — tell the story of a living forest shaped by geology, climate and fire.
