An intact agrarian complex from the turn of the 20th century

The manor that visitors see today reflects how a major Swedish estate functioned around 1900: a tightly interlinked cluster of service buildings, stables, workshops, farmhouses and tenant dwellings arranged around the main manor house. Nearly 360 buildings on the property preserve the working anatomy of a large rural enterprise—meat and dairy production, a brickyard, a fire station, storerooms and outbuildings all remain as part of the ensemble.

The main house and several outbuildings preserve original interiors and household fittings that illustrate the tastes and technologies of successive owners. Elements of 18th- and 19th-century construction sit alongside rebuilt areas from later repairs and expansions; the site contains medieval vaults and masonry remnants where the older monastic complex once stood, offering visible layers of building history.

Owned and managed by the Nordiska museet since the mid-20th century, Julita functions as an open-air cultural environment where conservation, research and public programming intersect. The estate's seasonal cycle—blooming of kitchen-garden plots, orchard harvests and gardening events—structures the visitor experience, while workshops and guided presentations bring archival objects and everyday agricultural practices to life.

Landscape and waterside character

Set beside Lake Öljaren and including forest, farmland and a number of islands in nearby Hjälmaren, Julita's topography combines open, water-facing vistas with enclosed garden rooms and woodland edges. The visual contrast between the manor's formal plantings and the surrounding working countryside reinforces the estate's role as a managed cultural landscape that also supports fisheries, woodlands and agricultural holdings.
