Ornässtugan is a two‑storey medieval loft house whose timbers were cut in 1504; the upper story overhangs the lower and the roof is clad in shakes, giving the building its unmistakable silhouette on the point of the headland. The core house, together with an adjacent residential building, smithy and outbuildings, forms a compact historical compound that reads as a small bergsman (mining‑era) homestead rather than a modern museum.

What defines Ornässtugan is its interior: the same curated collection of objects that opened to the public in 1758 remains in place, displayed inside the historic rooms. That continuity means the exhibition is experienced as a single surviving historical tableau — furniture, tools and display choices are seen in situ, so the building itself and its contents together tell the story of life here across centuries.

Legend and recorded history meet at Ornässtugan. The site is closely associated with the dramatic events of 1520 when Gustav Eriksson Vasa moved through Dalarna seeking support; folklore recounts a narrow escape that has been retold for generations. A low, quietly modern service building sits near the historic cluster and houses the café and ticket point; pastries are baked on site and the small shop focuses on local crafts. The café provides indoor and outdoor seating with views across the water.

Ornässtugan occupies a small peninsula on Lake Runn: lawns and shoreline paths invite lingering beyond the guided tour. In summer the water’s edge frames the timber silhouette; in winter the frozen lake and cleared skating tracks change the mood entirely. The grassy spaces are suitable for picnics and gentle exploration, while mature trees and lakeside light make the site feel intimate rather than monumental.
