The reserve is lively with fauna: hares and roe deer are commonly seen at dawn and dusk and the canopy and shrub layers support a robust bird community. Seasonal shifts are pronounced — spring brings green shoots, summer fills the forest with birdsong and insect hum, autumn turns needles and groundcover amber, and winter strips the scene back to sculptural trunks and frosted lichens.

From higher ridges and clearings small panoramas open toward nearby waters, including glimpses of local lakes, making the reserve feel larger than its footprint. Rock outcrops and hummocks create microhabitats where mosses, lichens and shade-tolerant plants persist; these textural contrasts are a defining feature of the reserve’s character.

Surfaces are generally firm and accessible on the main gravel tracks, while narrower woodland trails are uneven and may be muddy after rain. The overall experience is one of quiet, natural detail rather than dramatic vistas.

Managed by the municipality, Rottnebyskogen balances public access with protection of older forest stands; its status prevents active forestry in the reserve core while permitting simple visitor infrastructure. The woodland functions as an important local refuge for wildlife and as an accessible green lung for Falun’s residents, showing how peri-urban nature can be conserved alongside everyday life.
