Torekällberget grew from local preservation efforts in the early 20th century when collections and whole wooden buildings were rescued from demolition and moved here to form a coherent historical neighbourhood. Over decades farmhouse cottages, merchant houses and civic buildings were painstakingly re-erected and furnished to represent life in Södertälje and surrounding eastern Södermanland during the 1800s. The museum’s layers of reuse and restoration tell as much about local attitudes to heritage as they do about the eras they represent.

The site is deliberately divided into distinct atmospheres. In the reconstructed town you’ll find a small square, a traditional trading house and narrow streets where civic buildings and workers’ homes stand close together; interiors display shops, a café room and everyday urban domestic life. Beyond the town perimeter the rural scenes open into farmyards, crofts and meadows: fields edged by hedgerows, a windmill and outbuildings that recreate agricultural routines and vernacular architecture.

Many houses at Torekällberget retain carefully restored period interiors such as schoolrooms, a photo studio and a summer villa’s decorated dining room, each arranged with objects and finishes typical of different social settings. Workshops and craft spaces are presented as working exhibits at certain times of year: traditional trades, period tools and demonstrations give material context to the wooden façades and plasterwork so common across historic Södertälje.

The museum extends beyond buildings into cultivated gardens and pastures. Kitchen gardens are planted with historic vegetable varieties, cottage-garden borders grow heritage flowers and grazing areas host traditional Swedish landrace animals. Those elements combine sensory details — the tang of wood smoke, the creak of floorboards, birdsong and the smell of cut hay — that make the 19th-century reconstructions feel lived-in rather than merely static.

Torekällberget functions both as a display and an active community resource: the layout and programming are aimed at children and families as much as at heritage visitors. Hands-on experiences, school-focused activities and seasonal events animate the site, while exhibition spaces in the larger town houses present local histories and rotating displays that reach into 20th-century urban change as well as earlier rural life.

The museum’s ensemble captures the material contrasts of industrialising Sweden and preserves testimony to neighbourhoods and trades that metropolitan development erased.
