Bottarve Museigård is a museum farm whose principal house dates to the mid‑1800s and stands as one of southern Gotland’s best‑preserved parstuga residences. The complex is arranged around a traditional courtyard: the two‑storey main building, lower back house, and a long outhouse/ladugård that frames the yard and preserves the scale and silhouette of an historic agricultural estate. Surviving interior layouts — a central farstu, adjoining rooms and a second‑floor brudkammare — give a clear sense of domestic organisation from the era.

Architectural details are the museum’s story: the greyed timber facades, local masonry foundations and several ag‑täckta (thatched) roofs that characterize older Gotland farmsteads. The restored ladugård, rebuilt after a late 20th‑century fire, was reconstructed to match the original footprint and craft, preserving one of the island’s larger thatched barn roofs. The result is an authentic cluster of spaces where rooflines and building positions still speak to historical farming practices and seasonal rhythms.

Inside, rooms are furnished to reflect household life on a prosperous rural holding: simple joinery, stoves, wooden chests, textiles and farm implements arranged to show how everyday work, domestic ceremony and seasonal tasks were ordered. Exhibits rotate and include locally made tools and crafts; a small shop and occasional seasonal café serve traditional baked goods and crafts produced or curated by the local society, reinforcing the site’s role as both museum and active heritage venue.

The museum is operated by Hoburgs Hembygdsförening and functions as a community hub for talks, music, demonstrations and the annual winter kaffekalas among other gatherings. Programmes are seasonal, concentrating activity in the summer months when the house is regularly open and volunteers stage guided glimpses, demonstrations and simple public events that underline the living‑culture aspect of the site.

Set a short distance from Burgsvik in southern Gotland, Bottarve sits in a gently open agricultural landscape. The approach reveals the farm’s compositional clarity — yard, house and outbuildings — with views over fields and the low, stony island terrain beyond. The site’s scale and its low skyline make it easy to read from the outside and invite slow exploration of the yard and gardens.
