Kronholmen occupies a narrow coastal promontory on western Gotland where limestone bedrock, thin soils and persistent Baltic winds produce low heathland, stunted pines and open fairways. The ground reads as a sequence of terraces and fossil reefs: hard carbonate outcrops, shallow pockets of meadow and sandy hollows that host salt-tolerant plants and varied littoral habitats. On a clear day the horizon is a low, clean line of sea and sky, and the smell of salt and crushed thyme rides on the breeze.

From paddock to championship links

The modern character of Kronholmen was shaped in the mid-20th century when an agricultural paddock became the site for Visby Golf Club. Architects reworked the existing landforms into a 27‑hole layout while retaining the fundamental coastal qualities — firm turf, undulating ground and sea views — that give the course a links-like feel. Fairways thread through heather and low birch, and a sequence of greens and bunkers takes advantage of natural hollows rather than imposing artificial contours.

Archaeological echoes beneath the turf

Kronholmen sits in a wider landscape rich in Gotlandic archaeology: shoreline settlements, medieval harbour traces and ship finds have been recorded around the western coast. Occasional discoveries during landscaping and construction have revealed elements of older human activity, reminding visitors that the headland has long been a point of meeting between sea routes and island life. These quieter, buried stories are part of the place’s layered identity.

A habitat for coastal wildlife and seasonal change

The vegetation at Kronholmen supports a mix of coastal birds, insects and plant communities adapted to thin soils and salt spray. Migratory species pass the headland in spring and autumn; in summer the hum of insects and bright coastal flowers animate the links and margins. Winter delivers a different mood: low light, exposed silhouettes and the raw music of wind across open ground.

Kronholmen’s atmosphere is elemental — bright sun and bone-dry turf in summer, wind-swept stillness in shoulder seasons. Walking here reads as both natural and cultivated: a golfer’s choreography of tees and greens set within an essentially wild coastal stage. Stopping briefly to listen you’ll hear a chorus of wind, distant surf and the call of seabirds, and the visual palette is pale limestone, scrubby greens and the metallic blue of the Baltic.

Practical character and local context

Although Kronholmen is often approached for golf, its wider value lies in the combination of coastal nature, open panoramas and subtle historical traces. The area sits close to Tofta and Västergarn, forming part of the western Gotland coastline where beaches, small harbours and field monuments form a compact cultural and natural region. The low-density development preserves long sightlines and a sense of space that defines Kronholmen’s appeal.
