Ullahau Travel Guide

Ullahau is dominated by a broad, horseshoe‑shaped sand dune whose crest reaches roughly fifteen metres above the surrounding plain. The dune is part of Avanäset’s larger flying‑sand system, and its sculpted ridges, blowouts and lee slopes present a raw, wind‑forged character that changes with every weather front. From close up you see the grain of the sand, the delicate ripples left by gusts, and the sudden pockets where wind has been held back long enough for trees and lichens to take hold.

Contrasting with the open sand you’ll find stands of stunted pine that cling to sheltered hollows and lower slopes. These pines are wind‑trained and often contorted: trunks lean, roots splay on the dune face and branches are cropped by salt and sand. The woodland patches moderate the harshness of the dune environment, creating shaded microclimates and a shifting edge where forest and desert‑like sand meet in an unusually intimate way.

Although the scene reads as austere, Ullahau supports a disproportionately rich insect fauna and a range of specialised plants adapted to mobile sand and salt‑spray. Open sunny ridges host xerophytic herbs and mosses; sheltered pockets hold moister humus and tiny flowering plants. In spring and summer these microhabitats brim with life — active beetles, winged insects and pollinators that use the warm sand and sunlit clearings as staging grounds.

The reserve’s palette is subtle but striking: warm amber sand, the tannin brown of bark, silvered needles and the pale blue of the coastal sky. In low sun the dune throws long shadows; on windy days the crest becomes a moving, ephemeral ridge. Seasonal shifts are dramatic — pale, bare sand in winter, greening scrub and insect song in summer — so Ullahau reads very differently depending on when you visit.

Ullahau sits within a wider coastal mosaic on Fårö where beaches, rauk fields and heathlands are nearby. The reserve itself feels insulated from the cultivated inland: the dune’s openness gives a sense of exposure and immediacy to the elements, while the scattered pine stands offer moments of shelter. The overall impression is of a small, unusual desert at the northern edge of Gotland’s archipelago landscape.

Move slowly and look for contrasts — the way light catches sand ripples, the silhouettes of wind‑bent pines, tiny flowers near the dune base and the activity of insects on warm stones. Listen for wind patterns across open slopes and the creak of trunks in sheltered pockets. Ullahau rewards patient observation: the more you concentrate on detail, the more layered and alive the scene becomes.
