Diverse Ecosystems of Gotland

Södra Hällarna encapsulates nearly all of Gotland's natural types in a compact area south of Visby. Wind-driven pine forests cling to exposed ridges, while damp deciduous woods shelter in lower valleys. These contrast sharply with the barren alvar meadows and fractured limestone slabs, known as hällar, that define the upper plateau at around 35 meters above sea level. The thin soil layer exposes karst formations, prioritized under Natura 2000 for their rarity.

Dramatic Cliffs and Coastal Features

Steep cliffs plummet toward the Baltic, marked by landslide scars and block-strewn slopes. A middle terrace features ancient strandlines of polished cobblestones, resisting vegetation to reveal stark, treeless expanses. Below, fossil-rich beaches meet shallow waters dropping abruptly to a paleolithic edge. Trails hug cliff tops for vertigo-inducing sea panoramas, with paths descending to sandy shores where waves reveal smoothed stones and marine scents.

Trails Through Hidden Wonders

Three signposted loops guide explorers through jungle-thick paths overgrown with foliage, past caves harboring delicate orchids, and across open grasslands encroaching with shrubs. Graveled surfaces accommodate cyclists alongside hikers, weaving between biomes. The reserve's varied topography—from flat plateaus to rugged descents—offers immersive encounters with island geology and flora, including rare fungi like flockskivling in eastern sectors.

From Military Past to Protected Haven

Once a military firing range, Södra Hällarna transformed into a nature reserve managed by Region Gotland. Strict protections preserve its openness against encroaching woods, banning construction, tree felling, plant uprooting, open fires outside grills, and off-leash dogs. Permitted activities emphasize low-impact recreation: foraging non-protected berries and mushrooms, angling, and guided nature walks by local operators highlight its role as an accessible introduction to Gotland's wild side for day visitors.

Seasonal Shifts and Wildlife

Spring brings orchids and birdlife, including eagles and woodpeckers; summer invites picnics amid buzzing meadows; autumn paints muted tones under crisp winds. Wildlife thrives in unchecked zones—foxes, hares, hawks—while ongoing scrub management maintains vistas. The site's proximity to Visby makes it ideal for short escapes, blending tranquility with raw coastal power.
