Hökafältet preserves a patch of the great coastal sand fields that once stretched along the Laholm Bay. The landscape is a mosaic of rolling sand dunes, open sandy heaths and areas of pine forest planted to stabilise drifting sand; together these habitats recall the dynamic interplay of wind, waves and river flows that shaped this coast. The reserve forms part of a wider protected coastal complex and has been managed to keep pockets of bare sand and heathland alive where specialist plants and invertebrates thrive.

Within the reserve you move quickly between exposed dune ridges, sheltered stands of Scots pine and wetter lowlands near the mouth of the Lagan. The western edge meets the sea and the eastern side approaches the river; to the north there are reed-rich strand meadows and estuarine channels that attract waders and passerines. Walks reveal lingonberry and heather on dry patches, wind-sculpted pines on the higher dunes and reedbeds punctuated by small wet hollows.

Hökafältet is crisscrossed by more than ten kilometres of marked paths including a specially adapted 2.5 km accessible loop suitable for wheelchairs, prams or those preferring gentler surfaces. There are mountain-bike trails of varying difficulty that make the reserve popular with cyclists as well as foot traffic. Wayfinding signs, information boards and several small car parks serve the main entry points; basic visitor facilities such as toilets are indicated on the reserve maps and by noticeboards.

The mix of dry heath, forest and marsh creates good conditions for a range of birds and insects. In the reed-fringed northern wetlands you can expect reed warblers and wagtails, and herons may be seen near the estuary channels. Management actions such as creating sand exposures and grazing are used to maintain open habitats that benefit rare plants and specialist invertebrates; the area also supports a number of red-listed species that rely on open, sunlit sand and sparse vegetation.

Hökafältet’s story is one of both natural force and human intervention: originally a wide flygsand plain reshaped by wind and sea, much of it was later stabilised by forest planting to prevent drift. Contemporary conservation aims to reverse parts of that stabilisation where possible — removing non-native dense plantings, creating sandblows and reintroducing grazing — so that heath and open dune habitats can re-establish. The reserve’s management balances visitor access with measures to protect fragile sites.

The reserve’s experience is sensory and varied: the salt tang of sea air on exposed dune ridges, the dry scent of pine beneath the tree canopy, and the hush of reeds and distant gull-call by the estuary. Paths alternate between sunlit, wind-swept ridges and cool, sheltered forest; the terrain is generally gentle but offers sudden open panoramas to the west over the bay and quieter, bird-rich pockets to the north. This compact variety makes Hökafältet a rewarding short visit or a day spent exploring multiple habitats.
