Millennia of Illumination

The light at Kullen traces back to 1561, when Danish King Fredrik II established Scandinavia's first lighthouse here—a simple iron 'parrot' basket 20 feet up. Evolving through wood fires, candles, coal, oil, and finally electricity, the beacon has adapted over nearly 1000 years. By 1585, a stone tower with a lantern appeared, and coal fires lit the night from 1624.Automated in 1979 and fully remote-controlled since 1996, the lighthouse now operates without keepers, its beam powered by a 1000-watt bulb—the brightest in Scandinavia. An on-site exhibition chronicles this evolution, displaying artifacts from beacon baskets to Fresnel innovations.

French firm Barbier & Barnard crafted the lens house in 1900, weighing six tons and showcasing Augustin-Jean Fresnel's revolutionary design. The tower's base, solid against the elements, has endured storms that claim ships below.
