Vackermyren comprises four separate calcareous mires—wetland depressions fed by mineral-rich groundwater that supports a specialised flora. These mires are high in calcium and produce peat layers with a thin, open surface where sedges, mosses and lime-tolerant herbs thrive. In late spring and early summer small, showy orchids and other specialty plants appear, taking advantage of the carbonate-rich substrate and relatively stable moisture.

The mires sit ringed by spruce-dominated forest that shifts from dense, shaded stands to more open, nutrient-richer pockets close to the bogs. This juxtaposition—damp, open wetland against dark conifer—gives the reserve a layered character: reflections and small pools within the mires, and a cool, resin-scented canopy beyond. Birdsong and the faint buzz of insects are the main sounds; the area’s mood leans toward tranquil observation rather than active recreation.

Late spring and early summer are the most botanically rewarding months when orchids and calciphile species bloom, while midsummer brings dense green carpets and active insect life. Autumn’s lowered light and muted colours change the mood to a quieter, more contemplative palette. Winter covers the mires in snow and ice; the landscape then reads as sculpted white with a pared-back, almost architectural quality.

As a calcareous mire complex, Vackermyren represents a habitat type of both local and regional significance: its mineral-rich waters foster plant communities uncommon in more acidic bogs. The reserve’s value lies in its mosaic of open mire and surrounding forest and in the intact hydrology that sustains specialised species. Management focuses on preserving water quality and limiting trampling to maintain the fragile peat and rare plants.

A visit to Vackermyren is short and intimate rather than an all-day excursion; the reserve encourages slow observation—botany notes, macro photography and quiet listening. Facilities are minimal: interpretive signs may mark highlights, but the experience is essentially natural and low-key. The place rewards patience: small discoveries—a rare flower, a pattern of moss, a dragonfly sunning itself—are the moments that linger.
