The Gärde Hällristningar occupy a broad, water-polished slab in the river at Gärdeforsen where local people have pecked and incised images into the bedrock for millennia. The most striking motif is a large elk figure carved at almost life size; additional elk motifs, track stamps and sequences of human foot impressions create narrative scenes across the rock face. The carvings sit where water, ice and seasonal fishing would once have met people moving through a richly productive landscape.

What the marks mean and their age

Scholars interpret the motifs as a mix of hunt-themed imagery and symbolic markers tied to seasonal subsistence and ritual activities; the site has been linked to hunter–fisher groups who used the area in prehistory, and stylistic comparisons place many of the carvings in a broad Stone‑to‑Bronze Age timeframe. The largest single animal figure at Gärde is often highlighted in archaeological documentation for its scale, making the slab notable among Scandinavian rock‑art ensembles.

The interplay between shallow pecking, deeper incisions and the rock’s natural fractures affects how light catches the carved lines, so contrasts between dry and wet rock, and low sun angles, change the visibility of details.
