Armfeldt's army of over 10,000 assembled in Åredalen, swelling tiny Duved—then just three farms—with soldiers, 6,721 horses, and thousands of livestock. From Duved Skans, the fortress nearby, they launched toward the mountains on August 4, 1718. A catastrophic storm on New Year's Eve turned retreat into massacre, burying over 3,000 in snow.

Ferdinand Boberg, one of Sweden's premier architects of the late 19th century, crafted the obelisk's austere form to symbolize unyielding memory.
