Munkplan takes its name from the long historical presence of the Franciscan friars in Jönköping; place names such as Munksjön, Munkgatan and Munkplan preserve that medieval memory even though no monastery buildings survive today. The park itself was implemented much later, during the 1930s, as part of the city's expansion of the Söder quarter and the design of modest civic open spaces that served growing residential neighbourhoods.

The park is compact and domestic in scale: a trimmed lawn, several mature trees and seating that give the site a restful, residential feel rather than a formal boulevard or large urban plaza. Pathways cross the green in simple lines suited to short local walks; flower beds and seasonal planting add bursts of colour in summer, while low hedges and the surrounding apartment facades give the space a sheltered atmosphere.

Munkplan sits framed by early 20th-century housing and modest civic buildings that reflect the gradual urbanisation of Söder. The square was conceived as a planned open place within the street grid, intended to breathe space into otherwise dense blocks. From the park you can study the surrounding facades—mixes of functionalist and traditional apartment styles that chart the area's growth from late 19th-century expansion through interwar development.

The park's scale makes it a place for short pauses: a reading bench, a chat between neighbours, or a brief picnic. In spring and summer the trees and beds attract local birdlife and small insects; autumn brings a scatter of coloured leaves underfoot and a calmer, more contemplative light. Winter reduces the palette to branches and sky, revealing the geometry of paths and the silhouettes of surrounding buildings.

Though Munkplan itself dates to the 1930s, the area's deeper history — referenced in its name — stretches back to medieval monastic presence in Jönköping. That continuity of place is present in the street names and the way the park acts as a small urban void preserving green space where older maps once showed far different land uses: fields, shoreline and, later, industrial and residential growth.
