Origins and local name

Munkplan takes its name from the long historical presence of the Franciscan friars in Jönköping; place names such as Munksjön, Munkgatan and Munkplan preserve that medieval memory even though no monastery buildings survive today. The park itself was implemented much later, during the 1930s, as part of the city's expansion of the Söder quarter and the design of modest civic open spaces that served growing residential neighbourhoods.
