Skams hål is a small but ecologically rich nature reserve dominated by wet spruce and mixed conifer woodland that sits in a low-lying hollow west of Jönköping. The forest floor is carpeted in an array of mosses and liverworts; in damp hollows sphagnum and other peat-forming plants create a soft, spongey understorey that changes tone from acid greens in spring to bronzed, rusted hues in autumn. The reserve covers about 43 hectares and was set aside to preserve its unusual wet-forest habitats and the specialist species they host. Its compact size and mosaic of microhabitats make it vulnerable to changes at the edges, so the protected status emphasises careful use: stay on paths, avoid disturbing sensitive wet patches and respect seasonal signs. The surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland and forest, with the reserve forming a green pocket of semi-natural woodland.
