An intimate forest with deep-green textures

Skams hål is a small but ecologically rich nature reserve dominated by wet spruce and mixed conifer woodland that sits in a low-lying hollow west of Jönköping. The forest floor is carpeted in an array of mosses and liverworts; in damp hollows sphagnum and other peat-forming plants create a soft, spongey understorey that changes tone from acid greens in spring to bronzed, rusted hues in autumn. The canopy is often close, lending a dim, cool light and the distinctive scent of resin and leaf litter.

Why mosses and mushrooms matter here

The reserve’s protection recognises its high value for bryophytes (mosses and related plants) and for a diversity of fungi that fruit in late summer and autumn. The damp microclimates created by seepages and small wetlands favour species that are uncommon in drier woodlands. In mushroom season you may spot edible species tucked among decaying logs and moss beds; the overall patchwork of habitats — from wetter hollows to drier ridges — supports a rich small-scale biodiversity.

Walking the marked paths and reading the terrain

Marked trails and short loops make the reserve easy to explore without extensive navigation. Paths wind between wetter depressions and firmer ridges; fallen logs, small streams and tussocks are common features. The ground can be uneven and soft in places, so careful footing is needed where boardwalks are absent. Because the reserve is compact, walks are best taken at a slow pace to notice subtle plant communities and small invertebrates rather than for long-distance hiking.

Seasonal character and sensory details

Spring brings tender green moss and a chorus of migrant birds; summer heightens leaf density and the scents of warm resin; late summer and autumn reveal fungi and deepen the palette of the forest floor. In winter the canopy thins and the hush of snow amplifies distant bird calls and the sound of wind through needles. Throughout the year light filters differently through the trees, turning pools of pooled water into glinting, moving mirrors.

Conservation, size and landform

The reserve covers about 43 hectares and was set aside to preserve its unusual wet-forest habitats and the specialist species they host. Its compact size and mosaic of microhabitats make it vulnerable to changes at the edges, so the protected status emphasises careful use: stay on paths, avoid disturbing sensitive wet patches and respect seasonal signs. The surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland and forest, with the reserve forming a green pocket of semi-natural woodland.

Bring sturdy footwear for uneven, sometimes soft ground, and dress for variable weather under a closed canopy. A magnifier or simple hand-lens reveals tiny moss structures; a field guide helps with fungal and moss identification during late summer and autumn. Binoculars uncover bird life in the canopy while a notebook helps track the quietly changing details of this small but biodiverse reserve.
