Historic neighbourhood rescued and reassembled

Gamla Linköping grew from a preservation impulse: when old wooden buildings in Linköping were threatened by demolition, they were carefully moved here and reassembled to recreate the feel of a small Swedish town from a century ago. The town quarters are dominated by timber façades, painted trims and narrow courtyards; many houses retain period interiors and workshop spaces so you can sense how domestic life, crafts and trades were organised in the past.

The twofold layout: town and Valla farm

The site is arranged as an urban quarter and a rural counterpart. The city streets—lined with tiny shops, a schoolhouse and workers’ homes—contrast with Valla Farm’s open fields, farm buildings and animals. This deliberate split gives a compact panorama of domestic, commercial and agricultural life without long transfers between features, so the whole story of regional life is visible within a single visit.

Everyday buildings, living crafts and period detail

Many cottages house small exhibitions, artisans and themed interiors: tailor’s rooms, bakeries, living rooms with braided rugs and utilitarian kitchens. Craftspeople and volunteers sometimes demonstrate traditional skills, and several independent shops sell locally made goods, antiques and produce. Gardens and hedgerows are planted to historic styles, and small details—letterboxes, signage and painted house numbers—help the atmosphere feel lovingly authentic.

Seasonal rhythms and public life

The museum functions as both an exhibition space and a community stage: summer programs bring extra activities for children and families, while the winter season around Advent hosts traditional markets and festive decorations. A historic dance floor and occasional performances give the place the texture of living heritage rather than a static collection.
