Ågelsjön Nature Reserve

Landscape carved by ice and fault

Ågelsjön is a long, narrow rift lake set in a valley of bare rock, cliffs and mixed boreal forest; its dramatic fault escarpments give the shoreline a wild, almost sheltered feel. The lake reaches depths of roughly 35 metres and has a long water turnover time, which helps preserve unusually clear water and distinct underwater communities. Granite bedrock, open hällar and steep banks create the striking topography visible from the many viewpoints that look down to the water.

Ancient trees, specialist species

Large areas of the reserve are covered in old, coarse pines and mature spruce stands that harbour saproxylic (dead-wood dependent) insects and moss-rich ground flora. The veteran pines and sun-exposed rock outcrops are important habitats for species that are rare elsewhere in the region. Birdlife includes species adapted to deep, clear lakes; the presence of diving birds is one of the reserve’s quieter signatures.

Water activities and shoreline features

Visitors come prepared for a mix of water- and land-based activity: there are small sandy bays for swimming, smooth rock slabs for sunbathing, and calm stretches suited to canoeing or stand-up paddling. The water’s clarity invites careful exploration but currents and depth change quickly, so respect local conditions. A modest municipal bathing area with a small sand strip and accessible ramp is maintained near the main parking.

Trails, viewpoints and simple overnight options

A circuit trail around the lake provides varied walking: sheltered spruce forest on lower slopes, exposed hiking over hällmark with scattered pines, and steep sections where the path climbs to viewpoints with wide lake panoramas. The Östgötaleden route and local waymarked loops cross the reserve; several rest spots have grill pits and benches. For simple overnight stays there’s a wind shelter on Tallholmen and designated tenting areas rather than formal camping fields.

Layers of human history

Human traces beside the natural landscape are subtle but notable: remains of an old sawmill once operated along the shore in the early 20th century, and archaeological finds on Borgareberget point to prehistoric activity in the area. Traditional uses—occasional controlled burning and small-scale forestry—have influenced the reserve’s present mosaic of open rock, veteran pine and mixed woodland.

Practical character and stewardship

The reserve blends a feeling of remoteness with straightforward, low-key visitor facilities: a main parking area with basic dry toilet and bins, seasonal small private café near the car park, and wayfinding information on site. Management focuses on preserving the exceptional natural values—old trees, specialist insects and clear lake ecology—so activities are encouraged but regulated to keep impacts low.
