A highland meeting place of rock and birch

Tandövala occupies a band of elevated terrain where the last reaches of the Scandinavian mountain chain melt into Dalarna’s forested lowlands. The landscape is a mix of broken sandstone plateaus, thin soils and stunted birch and pine, creating a subtly barren, open highland character; slopes, exposed rock and scattered copses give the reserve a look more alpine than the surrounding lowland forests.

Through the reserve small watercourses have cut into the sandstone creating shallow ravines and mossy gullies; where the water meets harder bedrock you find the Germfallet area, a named cascade and wetland pocket in the reserve’s southern reaches. On the higher plateaus the ground holds peat patches, lichen and heathlike vegetation where sparse soil and wind-exposed conditions favour hardy plant communities over tall forest.

Plants, birds and a sense of remoteness

The mixture of open heath, thin forest and rocky ground supports species adapted to harsher conditions: low shrubs, heather, cloudberry in places and a range of mosses and lichens. Birdlife here tends to favour open-edge and highland specialists; the reserve’s quiet, patchy tree cover and wide views give a persistent sense of remoteness rather than dense woodland shelter.

In summer the reserve smells of warm pine resin, wet peat and flowering heaths; insects hum across sunwarmed stones and distant skylines can look vast. Autumn turns the birches a vivid gold against grey rock and wind becomes a constant companion. Winter brings snowdrifts that smooth the plateaus and muffle sound, while spring produces a quick, intense flush of green and a chorus of returning birds.

Tandövala is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace: short hikes to viewpoints and small waterfalls, time spent examining rock surfaces and plant communities, or simply pausing to watch light break across the plateaus. The terrain rewards careful exploration rather than fast travel—footpaths often cross boggy patches or uneven rock and the reserve’s character is one of solitary discovery rather than developed recreation.

Conservation note and local context

The reserve forms part of the broader mountain-fringe habitats of Malung-Sälen Municipality and contributes to regional biodiversity by protecting highland moor, sparse forest and wetland pockets. Its conservation status helps preserve the fragile, wind-swept plant communities and the small-scale hydrology of the area, keeping the open plateaus and their associated species intact for future seasons.
