Restored Wetland Paradise

Kvismaren's landscape tells a story of human intervention and natural revival. Once vast lakes, the area was drained in the 19th century for agriculture during the Hjälmaren lowering, leaving compacted soil prone to flooding. Restoration efforts since the 1950s, including canal dredging and protective embankments, have recreated shallow lakes like Fågelsjön and Rysjön. Today, regulated water levels and reed clearance mimic natural fluctuations, fostering lush bladvass belts teeming with life. This 732-hectare reserve, established in stages from 1978, balances open waters, fens, and grazed meadows.

Öby Hill: Heart of the Reserve

At the reserve's core rises Öby Hill, a frost-free rocky outcrop between the eastern and western sections. This natural haven hosts restrooms, grill areas, and information boards, making it an ideal base for exploration. In early spring, sun-warmed stones draw masses of adders and grass snakes emerging from hibernation dens, creating a mesmerizing reptilian spectacle. Trails from here fan out to bird towers and platforms, inviting visitors to immerse in the unfolding drama of seasonal wildlife.

Birdwatching Hotspot

Kvismaren ranks among central Sweden's top wetland bird sites, hosting around 200 species annually. Breeding residents include bitterns, bearded tits, marsh warblers, and marsh harriers in the reeds, while Rysjön shelters shoveler, garganey, and grebes. Migrants like cranes and geese fill the skies in spring and fall, with evening flights of thousands creating prehistoric spectacles. Rare sightings in the Kumla section feature red-breasted goose, glossy ibis, and whiskered tern. Hammarmaden and other meadows buzz with waders, swans, and raptors during floods.

Trails and Observation Points

A network of paths connects key spots: from Öby Hill to Västra and Östra Fågelsjön, Åslaholmen, and Sörön's ancient oak-alm woodland blooming with wood anemones. Bird towers at Löten, Rysjön, and Killingemaden offer close views, with some accessible via hardened paths. Expanses like Fiskingemaden and Värsta maden provide open vistas for spotting winter eagles at feeding stations or spring snipe displays. The Kvismare canal threads through, linking to Hjälmaren.

Global Conservation Status

Recognized internationally, Kvismaren is a Ramsar wetland of global importance and part of the EU's Natura 2000 network. These designations underscore its role in preserving vital habitats under international treaties. Managed by Länsstyrelsen with private landowners, ongoing restoration enhances conditions for wetland-dependent species amid a history of agricultural transformation.
