Birth of an Island Industrial Empire

In 1895, visionary entrepreneur Frans Kempe, CEO of Mo och Domsjö AB, transformed the rocky islands of Norrbyskär into a bustling sawmill hub. Relocating operations from mainland Mo, he established Mo Ångsåg, a steam-powered sawmill that became one of Europe's largest, peaking at 95,000 cubic meters of timber annually in the 1920s. This remote outpost in the Bothnian Sea, 39 km south of Umeå, relied on sea transport for logs and products, shaping a unique maritime industrial legacy.Kempe's ambition extended beyond production; he crafted a self-sufficient community for up to 1,400 residents, complete with housing, a bakery, workshop, school, and healthcare facilities including a nurse and midwife. This paternalistic model kept unions at bay until 1919, offering pensions and welfare in exchange for loyalty.

Preserved Relics of Sawmill Glory

The museum resides in the original engine hall of the sawmill complex, its sturdy wooden beams and machinery evoking the roar of steam engines long silenced. Artifacts like tools, photos, and models illustrate daily life, from log prams wrecked on nearby shores to the intricate social structure. Wander preserved worker cottages, their weathered facades whispering tales of families enduring harsh winters and booming summers.The landscape bears glacial scars from 10,000 years ago, with elongated islands and land uplift still raising the shores. A Model Society's Spiritual Heart

Frans Kempe's vision included spiritual provision; lacking a local church, the company funded one in Hörnefors and successfully petitioned for a separate parish in 1913, detaching 1,689 souls from Nordmaling. Though no church stands on the islands today, this episode underscores the comprehensive welfare system designed to foster community cohesion.Post-1952 closure, the islands faded to seasonal use, now revived by KFUM summer camps, guided walks, and tourism. The schoolhouse serves as a retreat center, breathing new life into Kempe's infrastructure.
