The Umeå River courses across northern Sweden from mountain lakes near the Norwegian border to the Gulf of Bothnia at Umeå and neighbouring Holmsund. Local place names, riverside parks and occasional art installations reflect a long human relationship with the water: fishing, timber floating historically and more recently recreational uses. The river remains a focus for community events, seasonal festivals and everyday life in Umeå.
