What it is
Arboretum Zürich is a historic lakeside park and tree collection on the Mythenquai waterfront. Opened in 1887 as part of Zurich’s lakeshore development, it was planned as more than a decorative green space: the trees were arranged according to botanical, geographic and historical ideas, giving the park a quiet scientific logic beneath its relaxed public use. Locals also know it as Rentenwiese.
How it feels
The park is broad, flat and open to the lake, with a mix of lawns, tree groups and exposed waterfront edges. On a fine day it feels airy and social, with people walking, sitting, reading or lying on the grass. Shade from mature trees matters in summer, while the open grass and water views make the place feel brighter and more spacious than a typical city park. In colder or wet weather it becomes much calmer, and the appeal shifts to a short promenade stop rather than a long stay.
Why people come
Travellers usually visit for an unforced break rather than a formal attraction visit. The park works well for a lakeside stroll, a picnic, a run, or a pause between other stops along Zurich’s waterfront. It suits families, couples, solo visitors and anyone wanting a low-effort outdoor space close to the city centre. The experience is flexible: you can pass through in 20 minutes or linger for a couple of hours if the weather is good and the lawns are dry.
Practical visit
Access is straightforward by public transport, on foot from the Enge and Bürkliplatz lakeside corridor, or by bicycle along the flat shoreline network. The ground is generally easy to manage, though current storm-related barriers or temporary closures can affect parts of the park. Facilities are basic rather than extensive, so it is best treated as an outdoor green space with nearby city amenities rather than a self-contained visitor site. Bring what you need for a picnic or a longer stop, and expect the atmosphere to be most active on warm afternoons and weekends.
Season and setting
The arboretum is at its best in clear, mild weather, when the lakefront views, tree canopy and open lawns all work together. Summer brings the most people and the most relaxed use of the grass, while winter and rain reduce comfort on the exposed waterfront. Even so, the park remains one of Zurich’s most practical places for a short scenic reset: central, free, and shaped by both landscape design and everyday city life.
