Obersee Travel Guide

Obersee is a small mountain lake in Glarus Nord, in the Canton of Glarus, set in an alpine valley near Näfels. It is not a large recreation lake with promenades and beach clubs; the appeal is its scale, stillness, and the way the water sits in a compact basin beneath the Glarus Alps. Visitors usually come for a brief scenic stop, a walk, or as the starting point for a longer outing in the Oberseetal area.

The setting is rural and distinctly alpine. Water, meadow, and mountain slopes dominate the view, with very little built frontage to interrupt the landscape. On a clear day the lake reads as calm and open, with reflections softened by wind or cloud moving across the valley. The mood is quiet rather than lively, and the site feels more like a local nature area than a formal tourist attraction. That makes it appealing to travellers who prefer unhurried places where the landscape does most of the work.

Most visits are simple and practical. You can walk along the shore, pause for photographs, sit for a picnic, or use the lake as a base for hiking in the surrounding hills. The experience tends to unfold slowly: arrive, take in the view, follow a short path or road-side section, then either linger for a meal or continue into the valley. A mountain inn or restaurant in the area adds a basic food stop, but the site is not built around extensive visitor facilities. Bring what you need for the day and expect a low-intensity outing.

Reaching Obersee is easiest by car from Näfels or the wider Glarus region, though public transport can get you part of the way before a final transfer or walk. From Zurich, treat it as a half-day excursion at minimum. Access is more rural than urban, and some road sections may be restricted or seasonal, so conditions should be checked locally before setting out. The lake itself is free to visit, and costs usually stay limited to transport, parking, and any food or drinks. It is best suited to clear weather and the main hiking season, when the valley views are at their strongest.
