Train
From Locarno, make your way to the Locarno train station. You can walk there from the city center; it’s about a 10-minute walk. Once at the station, purchase a ticket to Airolo. Trains run approximately every hour. After about 30 minutes, you will arrive at Airolo station. From there, you can either hike or look for local buses that may take you closer to the Swiss Alps.
Bus
You can take a bus from Locarno to Airolo. Head to the main bus station in Locarno, located near the train station. Check the bus timetable for the next bus to Airolo. The journey takes roughly 40 minutes. Once you arrive in Airolo, follow the signs towards the hiking trails leading to the Swiss Alps, which are well-marked.
Walking
If you are feeling adventurous and would like to hike, take a local trail from Locarno towards the hills. This is a more challenging option and may take several hours, so ensure you have proper hiking gear and plenty of water. Make your way towards the mountains while following the markers for the hiking paths that lead towards Airolo.
