Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Sion, which is well-connected to the rest of Switzerland. Take the A9 motorway towards Brig. Exit at 'Sion Est' and follow the signs for Hérémence. Continue on Route de la Grande Dixence for about 18 km until you reach the Grande Dixence dam parking area. Note that there is a parking fee of approximately CHF 5 per day. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, as the road can be narrow and winding in places.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a train from your location in Valais to Sion. From Sion, take bus line 441 towards 'Hérémence, Hameau' and disembark at 'Hérémence, Poste'. The bus ride takes about 30 minutes. From there, it is a 6 km hike or you can catch a shuttle bus (if available, check the schedule in advance) that will take you directly to the Grande Dixence dam. Be aware that the shuttle bus may incur an additional cost of around CHF 10 for a round trip.
Hiking
If you are feeling adventurous and want to hike to the dam, start from Hérémence village after reaching by bus. The hike to the dam takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Follow the marked trails (look for signs indicating 'Grande Dixence') which will lead you through beautiful alpine scenery. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, and be prepared for changing weather conditions. This option is free but ensure you have adequate supplies for the hike.
