Planned as a Volkspark in the early 1920s, it was designed for everyday recreation and has changed little in appearance since then. That purpose still defines the place: people come here to sit on the grass, eat outdoors, let children play, or use the sports areas for a short, low-key break from the city.

The park sits in a dense former industrial quarter beside the Viadukt, so the contrast is immediate: open lawn and trees against brick arches, traffic, and surrounding urban blocks. The park is free to enter and easy to reach from central Zurich, which makes it useful for short breaks, family outings, and unplanned stops between errands or meals nearby. It is most rewarding in mild to warm weather, when the lawns, play areas, and water features are in regular use. Shade is limited in parts, so hot afternoons can feel exposed. Facilities are basic but useful, and the atmosphere is public, local, and relaxed rather than polished or curated.
