The Old Botanical Garden is the former botanical garden of the University of Zurich, now used as an inner-city park and recreation space. Created in 1837, it sits on a compact hillside site near the city centre, with paths, planted sections, old trees and a few heritage buildings that still hint at its academic past. It is not a large landscape garden; the appeal lies in its scale, age and calm rather than in spectacle.

A visit is usually slow and brief. You move along gravel and natural paths, pass under mature tree cover, and pause on benches or small lawns. The garden feels green and sheltered, but also urban: traffic noise and the surrounding city are never far away. The Gessner Garden, with its medicinal herbs, adds a more ordered, scholarly note, while the 19th-century Palm House gives the site a preserved, slightly formal edge. In warm weather the garden is a good place to sit for a while; in colder months it becomes more of a short walk-through.

People come here for a quiet break rather than a full-day outing. It suits travellers who want a low-effort green space in the middle of Zurich, garden enthusiasts interested in historic planting, and anyone drawn to places where the city’s academic and civic history is still visible. The former university setting, the old trees and the protected Palm House make it more distinctive than an ordinary park, but it remains modest in size and pace. If you are expecting a major botanical collection, this is the wrong place; if you want a compact, reflective garden with a strong sense of place, it fits well.

Entry is free, and a visit usually takes 20 to 90 minutes, depending on whether you simply cross the garden or linger around the Palm House and herb beds. The site is easiest to reach on foot from central Zurich, especially from the main station area. Slopes and gravel paths mean the terrain is not completely flat, so wheelchair users may find some sections awkward even though accessible routes exist in parts. Dogs are not allowed. The Palm House is seasonal and is mainly used for events such as concerts, theatre and exhibitions, so the experience changes depending on the time of year and what is happening inside.
