Platzspitz is one of Zürich’s oldest public green spaces, a triangular riverside park set between the Limmat and Sihl in the city centre. It sits directly opposite the main station and beside the Swiss National Museum, so it functions as a gateway park rather than a stand-alone attraction. The ground is flat, the paths are easy to follow, and the scale is modest: this is a place for walking through, sitting down, or taking a brief pause between trains, museums, and riverside routes.

Atmosphere and setting

The park feels urban, monitored, and calm rather than secluded. Mature trees provide shade, lawns open toward the water, and the river edges give it a softer character than the surrounding traffic and rail infrastructure. In spring, the planting and tree canopy make it especially pleasant for a short stroll; in summer it works well as a lunch break spot; in colder months it becomes more of a practical cut-through. Why it matters

Platzspitz carries a layered history. It began as a pasture and festival ground, later became landscaped parkland, and then gained international notoriety as the site of Zürich’s open drug scene in the 1980s and 1990s. After closure and renovation, it reopened as a controlled public park. That history still gives the place a different tone from a typical city garden: it is both a heritage landscape and a reminder of a difficult chapter in the city’s social policy. Visitors do not come for spectacle; they come because it is central, usable, and historically charged.

Practical expectations

Entry is free and the park is easy to reach on foot from the station. Food and drink are not part of the park itself, but cafés, kiosks, and restaurants are close by. Restrooms are more likely to be found in the surrounding station and museum area than inside the park. The best conditions are clear, mild days; rain, wind, and winter cold reduce the appeal, though the park still works as a short urban stop. It is a low-effort visit with a strong sense of place, especially if you are already in central Zürich.
