Getting There

• Car

  To reach Karakul Lake by car from Hisor Valley, head east on the A-373 highway. Stay on this road for approximately 50 kilometers until you reach the town of Dushanbe. From Dushanbe, continue on the A-375 road towards the town of Kulob. After about 130 kilometers, you will arrive in Kulob. From Kulob, take the M-41 road towards Murghab. The journey from Kulob to Murghab is about 200 kilometers. Upon reaching Murghab, you will then take the road leading north towards Karakul Lake, which is approximately 50 kilometers away. The total travel time will be around 6-7 hours, depending on road conditions. Make sure to fill up your fuel tank in Dushanbe or Kulob as there are limited refueling options on the way.

• Bus

  If you opt for public transportation, take a bus from Hisor Valley to Dushanbe first. Buses leave frequently from the main bus station; the fare is typically around 10 Tajik Somoni. Once in Dushanbe, you can find buses heading to Kulob at the Southern Bus Station. The bus fare to Kulob is around 25 Tajik Somoni. After arriving in Kulob, you will need to catch a shared taxi (marshrutka) to Murghab. The taxi fare is approximately 50 Tajik Somoni per person, and it may take around 4-5 hours to reach Murghab. Finally, from Murghab, you can hire a local driver or take another shared taxi to Karakul Lake, which will cost around 30 Tajik Somoni and take about an hour.
