Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, make your way to the main road in the Masai Steppe region, heading towards the coastal city of Zanzibar. Follow signs towards Stone Town. Once you reach Stone Town, look for Mizingani Road, which is near the waterfront. Old Fort is located along this road, and you should find it easily marked. There is usually parking available along Mizingani Road, but be sure to check for any parking fees which may apply.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a dala-dala (shared minibus) from your location in Masai Steppe to Stone Town. The fare is typically around 2,000 TZS. Once you arrive in Stone Town, get off near the waterfront area and ask locals for directions to Mizingani Road. Old Fort is a short walk from most central locations in Stone Town. Remember to be cautious of your belongings in crowded areas.
Walking
If you are already in Stone Town, you can walk to Old Fort from anywhere in the town center. Head towards the waterfront and look for Mizingani Road. The fort is located directly along this road. The walk should take approximately 10-15 minutes depending on your starting point. Enjoy the local shops and sights along the way.
