Walking
From Moshi town center, start at the main bus station (Moshi Bus Stand). Head south towards the clock tower and take the road that leads to the market area. Continue straight until you reach the junction at the 'Kilimanjaro Coffee Lodge' and take a left onto the A23 road. Follow this road for approximately 10 kilometers. You will pass through the village of Machame. Look for signs indicating 'Umbwe' as you approach the turn-off for Umbwe. Once you reach the turn-off, continue straight for about 5 kilometers. You will see signs directing you to Umbwe Gate. The entrance is well marked and located in a lush rainforest area.
Bicycle
Rent a bicycle in Moshi town. Begin your journey at the Moshi Bus Stand and cycle towards the clock tower. From the clock tower, take the road towards the market area. Proceed straight until you reach the junction at Kilimanjaro Coffee Lodge. Turn left onto the A23 road. Cycle along this road for about 10 kilometers, passing through Machame village. Watch for signs to Umbwe as you approach. Turn onto the Umbwe road and continue straight for another 5 kilometers. Follow the signs until you reach Umbwe Gate, which is located amidst beautiful rainforest scenery.
Guided Hike
Join a guided hiking tour that departs from Moshi. The meeting point is typically at the Moshi Bus Stand. Your guide will lead you along the trails to Umbwe Gate. The hike usually takes about 1-2 hours, traversing through local villages and scenic landscapes. As you approach Umbwe, you will arrive at the gate, which serves as the entrance to the Kilimanjaro climbing routes. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and stay with your group for safety.
Motorbike Taxi (Boda Boda)
Hail a 'Boda Boda' (motorbike taxi) from your location in Moshi. Inform the driver that you want to go to Umbwe Gate. They will navigate through the streets of Moshi, taking you towards the A23 road. The ride will take about 30-45 minutes, depending on traffic. The driver will drop you off at the Umbwe turn-off. You may need to walk a bit more to reach the gate itself, which is surrounded by lush rainforest.
