Getting There

  • Car

If you're driving, you'll want to start from Arusha or Moshi. From Arusha, take the A23 road heading south to Moshi. Once in Moshi, follow the signs to the Kilimanjaro National Park gate, which is about 30 minutes from the city center. You will need to pay an entrance fee at the gate; ensure you have cash, as card payments may not be accepted. After passing through the gate, follow the Mweka Trail signs to the parking area where you can leave your car and begin your hike towards Uhuru Peak.

  • Public Transportation

To reach Kilimanjaro National Park via public transportation, you can take a dala-dala (shared minibus) from Moshi to the park entrance. Board a dala-dala from the Moshi bus station heading towards Marangu or a direct route to the park. The fare is usually around TZS 2,000 to 3,000. Once you arrive at the park gate, you will need to pay the entrance fee, which is approximately $70 USD for foreign tourists. After paying, you can arrange for a guide and porters if you haven't already, and then begin your hike on the Mweka Trail towards Uhuru Peak.

  • Hiking

After reaching the Mweka Gate, you will embark on a hike. The Mweka Trail is well-marked; follow the trail signs leading you to Uhuru Peak. The hike is strenuous and can take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours, depending on your pace and acclimatization. It's advisable to start early in the morning to avoid hiking in the dark and to make sure you reach Uhuru Peak by sunrise. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks, and be prepared for the changing weather conditions.
