Car
If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Moshi, the main town in the Northern Zone. Head southwest on the A23 road towards the Kilimanjaro National Park entrance. After approximately 30 minutes, you will reach the park entrance where you will need to pay an entrance fee (approximately $70 for international tourists). Once you enter the park, continue along the road until you reach the Machame Gate. From here, follow the signs leading to Barafu Camp. The drive will take around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on road conditions. Make sure to have a GPS or map for navigation as road signage can be limited.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a daladala (local minibus) from Moshi to Machame. The fare is typically around 2,000 TZS ($1). Once you arrive in Machame, you may need to hire a taxi or arrange for a guide to take you to Barafu Camp, as public transport does not go directly there. The taxi ride from Machame to Barafu Camp will cost approximately 50,000 TZS ($22) and take about 1 hour. Ensure you confirm the fare before starting your journey.
Hiking
If you are already within the Kilimanjaro National Park, you can hike to Barafu Camp from the previous camps such as Barranco Camp or Karanga Camp. Follow the established trails, which are well-marked. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks, as this hike can take several hours. It is advisable to hire a local guide for safety and navigation, which may cost around $25-$50 for the day, depending on your negotiation.
